Amigos de las Américas

Amigos de las Américas (or AMIGOS) is a nonprofit organization based in Houston, Texas with 25 chapters across the USA. The Vision of AMIGOS is “A world where each young person becomes a life-long catalyst for social change.” AMIGOS works towards this vision by inspiring and building young leaders through collaborative community development and immersion in cross-cultural experiences.

AMIGOS was founded in 1965 when 29-year-old Guy Bevil Jr., youth pastor at River Oaks Baptist Church in Houston led a team of 181 teenagers and young adults into Honduras to administer polio vaccinations best water bottles. The group took donations of supplies, recruited 36 doctors, and learned how to give the vaccines by practicing on themselves. Many participants made the 1,500-mile trip by truck in order to ship the supplies into rural Honduras. The first summer in Honduras, volunteers inoculated over half a million people.

Upon their arrival home, Bevil and his group founded Amigos de Honduras, which grew to be Amigos de las Américas within the next year. Over half of the original participants applied to return the next summer. For the following two decades, AMIGOS focused primarily on administering vaccinations.

AMIGOS has expanded to many different countries including Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, The Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Peru, though some countries do not currently have active projects.

Amigos de las Américas is a non-religious, non-governmental, non-profit organization based out of Houston, Texas. AMIGOS sends high-school and college age volunteers to countries in Latin America where they live for six to eight weeks with a host family in a small community.

Volunteers are partnered with one or two other volunteers in carrying out health, education, and environmental programs, ranging from latrine construction to formation of youth groups to teaching HIV prevention and dental hygiene. AMIGOS offers a range of programs that volunteers can participate in – Healthy Households/Healthy communities, Youth-to-Youth Development, Digital Media/Technology and Community Nutrition/Agriculture. The programs are carried out in partnership with partner agencies, which have included Save the Children, Plan International and the governments of the various countries above. Asset-based community development is at the core of AMIGOS projects.

Each year, over 700 young people take part in AMIGOS’ various Latin American programs. Over 27,000 people have participated in the program since it began.

The international office is still located in Houston and employs a small staff year-round to manage the programs. Sara Nathan is the President and CEO.

AMIGOS encourages returning project volunteers to take leadership roles within the organization sports water jug. Each project (generally organized geographically and thematically) is led by a Project Director (PD), who is aided by an Associate Project Director (APDs). Senior Project Supervisors (SPSs) and Project Supervisors (P-Sups) oversee individual community projects and act as liaisons between the senior staff and the volunteers. Veteran volunteers can also stay active by joining a local chapter board.

Das Unternehmen KARL STORZ GmbH & Co. KG aus dem baden-württembergischen Tuttlingen ist ein 1945 gegründetes Familienunternehmen, das medizinische Instrumente und Geräte produziert und vertreibt. Bei Humanmedizin-Instrumenten für die minimalinvasive Chirurgie sowie bei starren Endoskopen für die Untersuchung von Körperhöhlen ist der Medizintechnikhersteller Weltmarktführer und gehört im Geschäftsfeld Industrie-Endoskopie zu den führenden Herstellern. Das Unternehmen wird seit 1996, nach dem Tod des Gründers Karl Storz von dessen Tochter, Sybill Storz geführt.

Der Chirurgiemechaniker Karl Storz gründete sein Unternehmen 1945 in Tuttlingen und stellte zunächst hauptsächlich Instrumente und Lampen für den Bereich der Hals-Nasen-Ohren-Heilkunde her. Nach beständigem Wachstum des Unternehmens wurde 1971 die erste Niederlassung in den USA, die KARL STORZ Endoscopy-America, Inc. gegründet. 1987 markierte die erste laparoskopische Entfernung einer Gallenblase den Beginn der sogenannten minimal-invasiven Chirurgie, zu deren Verbreitung die Instrumente des Unternehmens Storz einerseits einen großen Beitrag leisteten, die andererseits aber auch einen großen Beitrag für die Weiterentwicklung des Unternehmens Storz brachte.

Nach dem Tod des Gründers Karl Storz 1996 übernahm dessen Tochter Sybill die Unternehmensführung und trieb die Expansion des Unternehmens voran. Über 100 neue Patente seit ihrer Amtsübernahme und jährliche Umsatzzuwachsraten zwischen 15 und 20 Prozent belegen das unternehmerische Geschick von Sybill Storz. 1998 präsentierte Karl Storz den vernetzten Operationssaal OR1, 1999 wurde ein Logistik- und Schulungszentrum in Tuttlingen eröffnet. 2000 führte das Unternehmen das erste mobile Dokumentationssystem für die technische Nutzung der Endoskopie ein.

In den Jahren nach 2000 erhielt die Geschäftsführerin Sybill Storz eine Reihe von Auszeichnungen für ihre unternehmerischen Leistungen und ihr soziales Engagement. 

Das Unternehmen stellt Produkte für die Humanmedizin (seit 1945), die Veterinärmedizin (seit 1989) und die industrielle Nutzung (seit 1976) her. Die Produktpalette umfasst dabei mehr als 8000 verschiedene Geräte, vom einfachen starren Endoskop über Zubehör wie Lichtquellen, Lichtleiter und Kameras bis hin zum komplett vernetzten Operationssaal OR1. Durch die vielfältigen Einsatzmöglichkeiten der Endoskopie kommen Geräte des Unternehmens heute in fast allen medizinischen sowie vielen technischen Disziplinen zum Einsatz.

Neben dem Stammsitz in Tuttlingen ist das Unternehmen in insgesamt 42 Ländern mit 46 Standorten vertreten.

In Deutschland produziert das Unternehmen außer in Tuttlingen noch in München und in Stutensee bei Karlsruhe. Weitere Produktionsstandorte sind Tallinn (Estland), Dundee (Großbritannien), Schaffhausen und Widnau (Schweiz) sowie die beiden US-amerikanischen Standorte Charlton und Goleta football uniform designer online.

States of Holland and West Friesland

The States of Holland and West Frisia (Dutch: Staten van Holland en West-Friesland) were the representation of the two Estates (standen) (Nobility and Commons) to the court of the Count of Holland. After the United Provinces were formed — and there no longer was a count, but only his “lieutenant” (the stadtholder) — they continued to function as the government of the County of Holland.

The Nobility was normally represented by the Land’s Advocate of Holland or Grand Pensionary of Holland, who combined the votes of the ten members of the Ridderschap (the “Knighthood”) in the estates; the nobility was also supposed to represent all rural interest, including those of the farmers. The Commons consisted of representatives of eighteen cities, in ancient feudal order: eleven of the Southern Quarter: Dordrecht best water bottles, Haarlem youth soccer goalie, Delft, Leyden, Amsterdam, Gouda, Rotterdam, Gorinchem, Schiedam, Schoonhoven and Brill; seven of the Northern West Frisian Quarter: Alkmaar, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Edam depiller for clothes, Monnikendam, Medemblik and Purmerend.

More powerful cities were allowed to send more representatives — Amsterdam had a delegation of four — but these then together had only one vote. The Land’s Advocate or Grand Pensionary was nearly always a previous pensionary of a city. Very important matters, such as about taxation, had to be decided on unanimously but normally decisions were made by majority. This majority was not reached after a voting procedure, but by a summary at the end of the meeting by the Land’s Advocate or the Grand Pensionary of the opinions expressed by the several members present, who would speak according to the feudal order: Dordrecht first, Purmerend last. He had literally both the first — as representing the nobility vote — and the last say in a meeting. Since the death of Johan van Oldebarnevelt any Prince of Orange also being stadtholder indirectly had much power over the States. He had the right to appoint the mayors of all cities, out of one of two candidates suggested by the appointment college of a city. Mayors of cities with city rights chose the officials who served as representatives in the States of Holland. The States of Holland were disbanded during the reforms by the Batavian Republic.

The States of Holland should not be confused with the States-General, or Staten-Generaal, the confederate government of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands as a whole. Each of the Netherlands had its own States and Holland was just one of seven. Nevertheless this province was so dominant that a politician controlling the States of Holland by being Land’s Advocate of Holland or Grand Pensionary, in fact controlled the Republic. Johan de Witt is a case in point, and Johan van Oldebarnevelt another famous example.

First mentioned in 1428, the States of Holland continued to exist until 1795 when the Batavian Republic was established under French rule.

Paradise Center for the Arts

The Paradise Center for the Arts is located at 321 Central Avenue in Faribault, Minnesota in the United States. For more than 60 years, this building, the Paradise Theater, served the region with a 915-seat atmospheric theatre, capable of producing arts programming on a fully functioning stage and showing newly released films. The theater closed in the late 1980s, under pressure from more modern, multiplex theaters that had sprung up in the region.

The period of vacancy at the Paradise Theater was not void of artistic enterprises. The Faribault Art Center (FAC) which became a nonprofit in 1965, Faribault Area Community Theater (FACT), founded in 1988 best water bottles, and The Merlin Players all became very active players in the regional arts scene. For over 40 years personalized toddler water bottles, the Faribault Art Center (now the Paradise Center for the Arts) has been part of the Faribault community. Begun in the 1950s by a small group of artists, FAC promoted visual arts to local artists and art lovers through classes, exhibitions, and community involvement projects. There are currently two community theater performances a year: one summer large scale musical and one smaller three-act play.

The Merlin Players (TMP) is a non-profit theater organization that provides professional, affordable theatre experiences to audiences throughout southeastern Minnesota. These productions are designed to offer actors, technical staff and director’s challenges for artistic growth. Dedicated to the ideology that artists are deserving of monetary reimbursement for their talents and efforts just like any other work, TMP provides stipends to everyone involved in productions, not just the actors, including students who provide backstage and technical support. This relationship provides students with experience working with professionals sock tape football, which has led to strong mentoring relationships. TMP has a production schedule of four full shows a year at the Paradise starting with Always, Patsy Cline in May 2008. It was designed by the firm of Liebenberg and Kaplan (who also designed the Uptown Theater and the Oak Street Cinema in Minneapolis). The motif is one of a Moorish courtyard with Turkish caps over the doors, turrets and “stonework” on the walls football socks ireland. Originally built to seat 915, the Paradise has been altered to seat 300. The remainder of the building has become a multi-purpose art center with an exhibition gallery, classrooms, and retail space, with fully restored facades in the lobby.
